On Thursday 16 June eight QAHS students spent the day volunteering at Gold Coast Recreation and Sports annual Trek for Rec Day at Burleigh Bears Junior Rugby League Club. Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Inc mission is to provide opportunities for people with a disability to participate in recreation and sport.
Volunteering in this capacity is a true reflection of service and what it means to give back to our community. Working alongside people with disabilities teaches you transferable skills that you will have for the rest of your life primarily communication, empathy, resilience and positivity. This combination of service is truly invaluable and gives our students an opportunity to make a positive change in society.
We look forward to growing and continuing our partnership with Gold Coast Recreation and Sport and are hoping to take another group of QAHS students to volunteer again at Gold Coast Rec and Sports annual athletics day which will be held in September.
Experience Reflection - Shivani Whala – Year 10
'The Gold Coast Rec and Sport Trek for Rec opportunity pushed me out of my comfort zone and was extremely rewarding. I thoroughly enjoyed helping and working with people with disabilities and assisting them in playing a range of sporting activities, as it granted me with a new perspective; I was able to develop a strong sense of gratitude and appreciation for the little things that I usually take for granted. I would definitely do this again as it is a great way to give back to the sporting community and help others.'
