Last week, QAHS staff and student representatives attended the Gold Coast University Hospital Open Day for schools. The event included a hospital tour, showcasing hands-on demonstrations regarding patient care, emergency interventions and the opportunity to meet a range of clinicians and hospital staff. One of the highlights of the tour was exposure to the Coordination Hub, featuring an intricate digital display of how bed availability is managed and patient triage. Year 11 students Diya Sharma and Jason Zhu have shared their experience below with the wider QAHS community. Many thanks to Gold Coast Health, Queensland Health and the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training for the opportunity. We look forward to sharing future opportunities for our students, as QAHS is a proud partner within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

Diya Sharma (Year 11)
I recently had the opportunity to attend the Gold Coast University Hospital Open Day and I found it to be both enriching and engaging. We were given a comprehensive tour of the Simulation Lab and the Coordination Hub where we spoke to some experts about their daily roles in the hospital. Along with multiple representatives from other schools, we learnt about how medical professionals can gain experience from working with simulated patients and 3-D printed models. Additionally, we were able to witness first-hand just how many individuals work together to keep the hospital running, and also to keep tabs on important factors such as the number of open hospital beds. I found it interesting to see the organisation of statistics on a big scale in a hospital like GCUH. Another highlight for me was the opportunity for networking near the end of the event where I was able to ask questions and find out more about possible avenues into the field of health.

Jason Zhu (Year 11)
We had the privilege of attending the 2024 Gold Coast University Hospital Open Day, situated in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, adjacent to the QAHS campus. During the event, we embarked on a comprehensive tour of the hospital, exploring a ward and engaging with training equipment including life-like mannequins and 3D printed injection training pads. A highlight of the day was gaining access to the hospital's coordination room where we witnessed the intricate monitoring of bed allocation, patient triage and ambulance and helicopter routes. Following the tour, student trainees shared their insights on the GCUH student traineeship program, enlightening us about the diverse opportunities available, ranging from podiatry to paralysis treatment. Additionally, a networking session provided us with guidance from GCUH healthcare professionals regarding pathways into healthcare and prospects for aspiring students in medicine. Overall, the event left a profound impression on me, broadening my outlook on the world of health.
